Humans have used the dog for many purposes since its domestication, which was between 20,000-40,000 years ago. These include hunting, management and protection of herds, war… and guarding.

Guard dogs are responsible for protecting their territory and protecting their family. They should not be aggressive but must be gentle and dissuasive. They will only attack if necessary. This sense is also a common trait.

There are many types of guard dogs. These animals are not considered separate categories within the Federation Cynologique Internationale and may be classified in different groups. Some sheepdogs and hunting dogs make excellent watchdogs.

Guard dogs are not allowed to be in violation of the law
Guard dogs are not allowed in France. It is not necessary to notify anyone who enters your home of the presence or health of your four-legged friend.

You are responsible for your dog. You could be held responsible if your dog bites or attacks another person. Some circumstances are however considered exceptional. This applies to breaking into homes or when someone passes through your garden. It is even more important if the Beware Of Dogs sign is clearly visible. This panel should be displayed so that the person bitten cannot claim he didn’t know about the animal’s presence. Avoid Naughty Dog and Dangerous Dog signs. These signs could be used against your dog in the case of problems.

France has two categories of dogs that are subject to law. These dogs are classified as category 1 (attack) or category 2 (defence). These dogs can be used to guard or not. They are subject to the January 1999 law on dangerous dogs.
